The "Springfield Dome" Theory

I have brought this up from time to time while in the KSPR Weather Chatroom and I often get the same reaction..."The What?".

It is an idea I came up with a few years ago after observing the oddball weather that comes through "The City With The Most Variable Weather", Springfield. I noticed that once in awhile we will be under a severe weather threat (Storms/Tornadoes), and just as the storms appear to be heading right into town, they dissipate, only to reorganize once they move out of the city. I have noted several dangerous storms that could have done a lot of damage do that very exact thing. So one day I made a wisecrack to some friends who were weather watching with me that "We must have some kind of invisible dome that protects us from time to time..." and that is when the "Springfield Dome Theory" was born.

Yes, sometimes we get some very nasty weather that does a number on the city, so I just go into geek-mode and say "The threshold of the dome must have been exceeded by the storms obvious velocity."....and people stare at me.

Its just a fun thing that I really don't take seriously but it is an interesting thing to notice if you ever watch the weather radar from time to time.
